Anti-propaganda Propaganda by gyaban Anti-propaganda Propaganda by gyaban

Our world is made of sides. I suppose that if beings from outer space would visit our planet, they would be extremely surprised about how divided we are, especially for such a small ball in the cosmos. Countries, regions, political parties, religions, education, various industries, wars, various laws, various rights: literally anything is a ground for division. The existence of these groups is so commonly accepted that many don't hesitate to actually define themselves through them: "I am an ecologist", "I am an atheist", "I am a democrat", and so on.

Yet, if one would step back for a minute, what looks obvious is how similar people are, despite those beliefs. Most feel the same coldness under the same rain, the same fear after the same noises during the same nights, the same illnesses after behaving the same way, the same love for the same relatives, the same mothers worrying about the same children, the same alcohol to forget the same things. Even when it comes to what we are physically made of, genetics studies show that Europeans, Americans, Africans, Japanese or even Siberians people all have common ancestors (that actually lived in Eastern Africa). In a nutshell, technically, we all are brothers and sisters.

From there, why this irrepressible need to create groups and subgroups? Why create categories? Are we that arrogant to need this illusion of being different? Do we feel better with boundaries around us? Is it that important to defend some kind of side, to the point it becomes vital to destroy other ones? In the light of our deep identity, how absurd is that?

The guy on the picture is obviously against propaganda, but by attacking it, he is also doing some kind of propaganda. This is why the picture is recursively shown inside the paper he is holding, in order to illustrate the paradox lying there: even if you are against propaganda, there is not much you can do, because fighting it is also doing some. I am helpless about it, of course, but still, I am wondering why we stuck ourselves in this foolish situation...

tried to make a non-contradictory anti-propaganda one :
• no slogan, just a pic, like Che Guevara's poster
• with Shepard Fairey's Obama Hope colors
• and Hugh Laurie's Gregory House face

That is very powerful! This is a very great reason why I hate the Ad Council, and anti-drug, anti-underage drinking, and anti-tobacco organizations that lie to teenagers and young adults. They are as anti-American as Nazism and Fascism. These organizations don't deserve to live. These anti-American organizations deserve to be forced to file for bankruptcy and defunct. I didn't elect these organizations to anything and I didn't agree to let them lie to anyone.
I like the message. This is a means to get even with the status quo and take a stand against the establishment!

I love how America used to spout about not using propaganda and then sing "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy". A capitalist oxymoron to point to just one of trillions that would follow.

Recursively Self-referencial! yay!

Good news is that the word propaganda is just a noun of the verb "to propagate" which means "to make more of itself".

Propagating a species is the act of said species reproducing.

Propaganda usually refer to the propagation of ideas.

Most people use the term interchangably with "brain washing" or "mind control" but that is not really true.

Propaganda as mind control is actually just spreading ideas such as "permanent unconditional trust of an authority figure is undeniably good for everyone".
This idea is unhealthy because it is just plain objectivly not true. Authority figures are trustworthy on an individual basis just like everyone else.

When propaganda propogates objectivly helpful ideas and/or respectful subjective opinion ideas (while intentionally keeping the subjectivity and objectivity easily distinct and identifiable)
Said media and messages are helpful in general.

In fact this right here is the reason why this anti-propaganda propaganda is just that: It says "say no to propaganda" without specifying which specific types or why.
It implies that people should say no to all propaganda, and does not even explain why.

So in the end the important thing is that it's not the propaganda that is important, it is the message that is being propagated.

Agreed. I think the solution is to work through all of our "positionality," which means we have to be willing to let go of "being right." David Hawkins, whose teachings I work with has lectured on this extensively. If this sparks interest in you, google his name. Either way, we agree, i believe, that we have to move beyond unnecessary and destructive battles with others, ourselves, and transform so that we can embrace all of life, whether it is to our liking or not.
Happy Holidays! And thank you for this provocative artwork and commentary.

This piece is dripping more with irony than the guy with sweat (love that detail btw).
As for the distinctions...maybe it's cause we've become the top predator on this planet. We have nothing that actually threatens us. So we get bored and feel the need to invent something that we can "struggle" to survive against. Something to have an imaginary evolutionary race against. Even if it's about weapon development or intellectual superiority.
Dunno...random thought.

Nice image though after reading your point I suppose it really comes down to what we mean by propaganda. I think of it as dishonestly pushing a point, usually by governments against their own, or foreign populations, and most commonly to support a war / invasion / or terrorist act. In this, admittedly narrower sense, I think its a great idea to say no to propaganda.

I don't believe there to be anything inherently wrong with using labels since it has to do with information. I mean people call me American because I'm from The United States of America they call me Hispanic because genitics come from Mexico. Its not like humans created these terms to hate each other that just happened it's, unfortunate sure, but that's just life. Plus I always found it silly that people assume any intelligent extraterrestrial life wouldn't be just as bad as humans are. Anyway nice work.

I get your point, but still, human beings created countries, and borders between them. Too often, the "bad ones" are simply the ones living on the other side of the line... As for some kind of extraterrestrial life, it could be as silly as humans are, but one can hope it wouldn't be the case ;) Thanks for your comment.
